Acknowledgements

Land Acknowledgement

In the spirit of truth and reconciliation, we acknowledge that the office of Muskoka Futures stands on the ancestral lands of the Anishnaabeg people, including the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations—collectively known as the Three Fires Confederacy. Muskoka’s soil carries the footsteps of the Huron-Wendat and the Haudenosaunee Nations, who have left their indelible mark on this land. This territory was once the heart of the Wendat Nation’s existence, and we recognize the Southern portions of Muskoka as the traditional territory of the Wendat, who resided in Simcoe County between AD 1300 and 1650. During those centuries, they traversed Muskoka regularly, leaving a legacy of connection to this place. We acknowledge the impact of colonization, including the tragic chapters of genocide that have unfolded on these lands. We stand in solidarity with the resilience of the Wahta Mohawks First Nations, Moose Deer Point First Nation, and the Moon River Métis, who continue to call Muskoka home. At Muskoka Futures, we commit to fostering an environment that recognizes and respects the enduring legacy of Indigenous peoples. May our work contribute to the ongoing process of healing and understanding, as we honor the strength, wisdom, and cultural richness of those who have walked this land for generations.

We thank Lacey DeCaire-McCabe, a member of our esteemed Board of Directors and owner of LDM Counselling for helping us to learn and for her generous sharing of this land acknowledgement.

Equitable Innovation Statement

Empowering Entrepreneurs, Strengthening Muskoka’s Economy Through Equitable Innovation

At Muskoka Futures, we believe that a thriving, resilient economy is built by bold entrepreneurs from all backgrounds and communities. That’s why we provide the guidance, investment, and opportunities needed to help businesses succeed—fueling economic growth and job creation across Muskoka.

We know that talent, drive, and innovative ideas exist everywhere, but access to entrepreneurial support and capital is not always equitable. Many entrepreneurs face systemic barriers to funding, mentorship, and resources—including entrepreneurs who experience various forms of inequality, such as women, members of racialized communities, Indigenous people, members of LGBTQ2S+ communities, persons with disabilities, newcomers, and those who have experienced poverty, financial exclusion, or geographic isolation.

What is Equitable Innovation?

Equitable innovation means creating beneficial change that removes barriers, reduces bias, and closes access gaps—ensuring that all entrepreneurs have a fair opportunity to contribute, compete, and thrive.

Our Commitment to Equitable Growth

Muskoka Futures is committed to ensuring that all entrepreneurs in our region have access to the tools they need to succeed. We do this by providing:

✅ Flexible financing to help businesses launch, grow, and scale

✅ Expert mentorship and guidance to navigate challenges and seize opportunities

Investments in businesses that drive innovation, economic resilience, and job creation

✅ Support for businesses embedding inclusive hiring, accessibility, and equity-driven strategies

✅ A continuous commitment to reducing bias, barriers, unmet needs, and access gaps in our programs—working in partnership with the diverse communities we serve through ongoing equitable innovation.

By championing inclusive entrepreneurship, we are building a stronger, more resilient Muskoka—where businesses thrive, innovation flourishes, and every entrepreneur has a fair shot at success.

If you’re ready to turn your vision into reality, we’re here to help. Let’s build Muskoka’s future together.

Muskoka Futures thanks Anna Dewar Gully and Dr. Kirsten Liesch of Tidal Equality for their support and guidance in creating an equitable innovation practice called Equity Sequence®, and for crafting this Equitable Innovation Statement.
